STEP 1: Sketch the Composition and Lay In the Background

Very lightly sketch the composition with a pastel pencil—just enough to see a hint of the drawing or it will show through the paint later.

Lay in the sky using a foam sponge tool and light blue PanPastel. Skip over some parts of the sky to allow the paper to show through in areas—these will become the cloud forms.

Continue working from the background forward. Indicate the hill with blue-violet.
